Enjoy fresh, local Ontario produce this June!

Share

June 5th-9th is Local Food Week, a time to enjoy fresh food grown, produced and processed in Ontario! Did you know that when you buy eggs in the grocery store, you are purchasing them from one of Ontario’s 500 egg farm families?

These farm families work to supply fresh eggs to your local grocery store; eggs go from farm to grocery store in just 4-7 days! Enjoy fresh Ontario food by making this Cajun Summer Veggie Skillet: a healthy and hearty skillet with a spicy kick.

Don’t skip the yolk!

Ever wonder why some eggs have different yolk colours? A common myth is that the colour of the egg yolk is related to freshness or nutrition; that is not the case!

The colour of an egg yolk is primarily determined by the types of pigments the hen consumes in her diet. Eggs that come from hens that are fed a predominantly wheat-based diet tend to have a pale yolk, while hens that receive a diet that is higher in corn and soy will have a brighter, more vibrant yolk. The colour of an egg yolk has nothing to do with the freshness of the egg because it is related to the hen’s diet. Your eggs are fresh and nutritious no matter the yolk colour!

Different coloured egg yolks are also equal in nutrition. The only exceptions to this rule are with specialty eggs like Vitamin D and Omega-3 enriched eggs. These eggs will have higher levels of Vitamin D or Omega-3 fatty acids because of additions to the hen’s diet.

Most importantly, the majority of an egg’s nutrients are in the yolk, including essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and half of an egg’s protein.

No matter what eggs you buy, the most important tip we can give you is don’t skip the yolk! Read the Blog >>  | Watch the video >>
