Volunteer with Taste Canada

There can never be too many “chefs” in our kitchen!

Taste Canada would not be possible without the generous support of our friends, volunteers, and community of Canadian food & beverage writers, and cookbook authors. From our dedicated volunteers to our in-kind partners, thank you for everything you have done to help Taste Canada grow from its humble beginnings to a national not-for-profit organization. The art of culinary writing is an essential part of Canadian culture: it showcases our diversity, brings us together at Canada’s table, and nurtures a vibrant national conversation about food.

This year, please consider adding your support to our programming that celebrates the joy of cooking, delicious recipes, and stories about food from a Canadian perspective.

Coming together with fellow Canadian food writers for Taste Canada’s Annual Awards Gala was a highlight of my year! It was inspiring to celebrate and mingle with so many talented culinary professionals in this great country of ours. I really admire Taste Canada’s vision for showcasing our country’s diverse talent and for making sure Canada’s vibrant culinary voices can be heard around the world.

Taste Canada and their awards gala was an important motivator for us to strive for excellence in creating our book – I can’t imagine our Canadian Food Writers industry with out them!

Food is both fundamental and the world’s largest industry. Food drives economies and societies. Food and cooking are about our very survival as a species. And yet, curiously, until quite recently, we’ve largely ignored food writing, just as we’ve ignored our culinary history. Perhaps that’s partly because, for centuries, except in the most exceptional circumstances, it was women who were the keepers of food knowledge; women who did the vast majority of food preparation and cooking; women who fed nations through wars and plagues and famines; through recessions and great depressions. And it was women who wrote cookbooks and books about culinary knowledge – now finally being recognized as one of our most important sources of primary history. When we write about food, we are really writing about humanity and community; about love and death and biological imperatives; and about the powerful connections and similarities between us. Food writing has been as undervalued as the actual work of food preparation. Taste Canada is the only body in the country recognizing the importance of the work of food writers. Food stories are after all, the real stories of our lives.

We're so lucky to have an organization that supports and promotes our country's burgeoning culinary scene, both here in Canada, and to the world.

As a cookbook author I have experienced the challenges of getting your book noticed on shelves crowded with US and International cookbooks. Taste Canada provides a unique national platform where Canadian culinary authors can be seen, discussed, and honoured for their contribution to our national cuisine.

Taste Canada recognizes the unique content of Canadian Cuisine. It has been an encouragement and support for us, as Canadian authors. In this age of "global community", I think it is even more important for us to maintain a Canadian identity in the food industry.

As a cookbook author for almost 20 years, I have witnessed Canada's culinary curiosity increase dramatically. Food is culture, and documenting our culinary identity through recipes and other written culinary works provides a snapshot of the evolution of our Canadian culinary identity. Taste Canada recognizes this and by acknowledging the work and support behind culinary writing, helps to strengthen our Canadian connection to food as part of this cultural identity.
