Carolyn Herriot: Author of short-listed title "The Zero-Mile Diet"

Carolyn Herriot is a passionate organic gardener, photographer, lecturer and a cook who loves to eat. After 20 years of operating her nursery, Carolyn continues to grow “Seeds of Victoria” at The Garden Path Centre in Victoria, British Columbia.

She is also a regular contributor to GardenWise magazine and the author of two bestselling books — The Zero: Mile Diet: A Year-Round Guide to Growing Organic Food and A Year On The Garden Path: a 52-Week Organic Gardening Guide.

What was the inspiration for The Zero-Mile Diet?
The fact that it only took me 5 years to turn my blank canvas property into a beautiful edible landscape that feeds us with fruits and vegetables year round.

What was the biggest challenge you faced in writing/publishing this title?
Getting it done in 3 months! November to January.

What aspect of the book are you most proud?
The ease of access to information. The fact that it is a book about feeding yourself from the backyard sustainably, not just another book about growing vegetables.

What do you wish you knew before starting the project?
That book designers do not follow layout instructions of completed manuscripts. This delayed the availability date and caused all sorts of ordering problems for bookstores and Amazon and Chapters on-line.

What advice would you give aspiring culinary authors?
Make the book delicious to read!

The winners will be announced at the Canadian Culinary Book Awards on Monday, November 7, 2011, at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair.
